If you’re a New Orleans area homeowner, you probably spend a lot of time making sure that your home and property are carefully maintained.
If you’re wondering about the condition of your roof, and whether or not it might have any damage, check out these helpful tips on what to do.
Steeply sloped roofs are a very common roofing style for residential roofs. Start by examining the exterior of your roof, then check for leaks from inside your attic space. On the outside of your roof, first look for any superficial damage to shingles and joints. If the nails used on your shingles weren’t properly covered, they can rust, which leaves a hole in your roof. If you see any damaged mortar or cracking around the edges of your roof, where it meets your gutters or chimney, you could potentially see leaking in these areas.
As flat and low sloped roofs are built a little differently from steep roofs, you will need to check for leak damage in different places. A major cause of a leaky roof on a flat roof is due to improperly functioning drains. Physically inspect your drains for any blockages, as this may be the simplest and most obvious cause for leaks. Inspect all caulking, tar, and other sealants to ensure that they are actually adhered correctly. Lastly, make sure to clean your roof of any debris, as these debris can hold on to a lot of water for longer than you might expect.
